Ingredients for apple strudel recipe

  • 650 g dessert apples

  • 55 g sultanas

  • 175 g sift plain flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 lightly beaten eggs

  • 70 g fresh breadcrumbs

  • 150 g unsalted butter

  • 80 ml warm water

  • 4 1/4 tablespoons caster sugar

  • icing sugar for dusting

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • vanilla custard for serving

How to make Apple Strudel

  • add flour and salt into a mixing bowl

  • make a well in the centre

  • add the beaten egg and warm water

  • mix evenly to obtain a smooth dough

  • transfer the dough into a lightly floured bowl

  • leave the dough in a warm place for twenty minutes

  • melt 70 g butter in a pan

  • add breadcrumbs and fry until golden brown

  • set aside

  • add cinnamon and sugar into a mixing bowl

  • mix evenly

  • preheat oven to 350°F

  • carefully flour one side of a tea towel

  • put the pastry on top of the tea towel

  • stretch dough to the size of a rectangle measuring 50 cm x 60 cm

  • set aside for twenty minutes

  • melt the remaining 80 g butter

  • set aside

  • peel and slice the apples into thin slices as per most apple strudel recipes

  • mix apples with breadcrumbs, cinnamon mixture and sultanas

  • brush dough with melted butter

  • leave some melted butter for later use

  • sprinkle the apple mixture evenly over the dough

  • discard the thick edge as per the apple strudel recipe

  • roll the strudel up like a Swiss roll

  • tip the strudel onto a tray

  • make sure it is seam-side down

  • brush the pastry well with butter

  • bake the apple strudel for forty minutes or until crisp and golden
