Recipe to make California Roll

 

California Roll recipe is a very famous sushi recipe which is called Kariforunia roru by the Japanese. California roll sushi is a maki-zushi (roll) which is type of sushi roll. California roll is usually made inside-out as opposed to traditional sushi rolls which are wrapped with the nori on the outside and some of the main ingredients for California roll recipe include avocado, crab meat or crab sticks and cucumber. Common types of California roll include suehiromaki or temaki, maki and uramaki.

Ingredients for suehiromaki recipe or temaki recipe (one piece)

  • 45 g vinegared rice

  • 1 stick surimi

  • 1/4 sheet nori

  • 1 slice avocado

  • 3/4 teaspoon mayonnaise

  • 1 lettuce leaf (green part only)

  • soy sauce

  • wasabi

Ingredients for maki recipe (one piece)

  • 135 g vinegared rice

  • 1 1/2 sticks surimi

  • 2/3 sheet nori

  • 2 thin slices avocado

  • 3/4 teaspoon mayonnaise

  • 1 lettuce leaf (green part only)

  • soy sauce

  • wasabi

  • makisu

Ingredients for uramaki recipe (inside-out maki recipe) (one piece)

  • 135 g vinegared rice

  • 2 sticks surimi

  • 1 sheet nori

  • 3 slices avocado

  • 3/4 teaspoon mayonnaise

  • 1 lettuce leaf (green part only)

  • 1 1/4 tablespoon white sesame seeds

  • small cutting board

  • clingfilm

  • makisu

How to make suehiromaki or temaki sushi ( one piece)

  • use your left hand to hold a square sheet of nori

  • make sure on corner of the nori is pointing downward as per the suehiromaki sushi recipe

  • put a tablespoon of vinegared rice in the middle of the nori, vertically

  • add the filling in the centre of the rice, lengthways as per the suehiromaki recipe

  • roll the nori into a cone-shaped by folding over the left and right sides of the nori as per the temaki sushi recipe

  • serve the suehiromaki or temaki sushi with wasabi and soy sauce

How to make maki sushi (one piece)

  • put nori on makisu

  • put the vinegared rice on the nori

  • spread the vinegared rice about 1 cm thick

  • make sure there is a 1 cm border of nori at the top and bottom

  • slice lettuce into small pieces

  • line up the lettuce horizontally across the vinegared rice

  • you should get a continuous strip of green down the middle of the vinegared rice

  • add the avocado slices and surimi sticks on the lettuce

  • put mayonnaise on the surimi sticks

  • lift the edge of the makisu that is nearest to you with both your thumbs

  • hold the avocado and surimi in place with the tips of your other fingers

  • slowly roll but make sure it is tight

  • when you almost complete rolling, press a few times all over the makisu

  • finish off the rolling as per the maki recipe

  • make sure you press firmly as per the maki sushi recipe

  • unroll the makisu as per the maki sushi recipe

  • place the maki on a cutting board

  • wet a sharp knife with some water and vinegar

  • cut the roll into thick slices, cut in a single motion without sawing

  • serve the maki with soy sauce and wasabi

How to make uramaki sushi (inside-out maki) (one piece)

  • spread 1 cm thickness of vinegared rice over a sheet of nori that is placed on a board

  • sprinkle sesame seeds over the vinegared rice

  • use your fingers to tap on the sesame seeds to make sure sesame seeds are stuck to the rice

  • cover with clingfilm

  • place makisu on the clingfilm as per the uramaki sushi recipe

  • quickly invert the board with everything on it to make the nori on top and makisu underneath

  • put avocado, lettuce leaf, mayonnaise and surimi horizontally down the middle of the nori

  • roll and at the same time hold the clingfilm in place

  • you must press firmly while rolling as per the uramaki recipe

  • you will see the vinegared rice wrapping in the avocado, lettuce leaf and surimi in the middle

  • unroll the clingfilm and makisu as per the uramaki sushi recipe

  • use a wet and sharp knife to cut the uramaki into thick slices

  • serve the uramaki with soy sauce and wasabi
